Thunder Road is a black and white 1958 drama–crime film about running moonshine in the mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee in the late 1950s. It was directed by Arthur Ripley and starred Robert Mitchum – who also produced the film, co-wrote the screenplay, and is rumored to have directed much of the film himself.

About the Author – Alex Gabbard has a lifelong interest in auto racing. He is an award-winning photographer & author and has had numerous photos and articles published in a long list of magazines. He is the author of 14 other books, including Vintage & Historic Racing Cars, Fast Fords, and World’s Fastest CarsGabbard holds a Masters degree in physics and a Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering and physics. He is the author of the book Return to Thunder Road. It is the real-life story of moonshining as a way of life in the southern Appalachians. Readers ride with the moonshiners as they tell their stories from corn mash to car loads of “mountain dew”. This is a powerful saga of an age gone by when making whiskey grew from a small operation to pass time to a massive effort to shut down the multi-million dollar trade with a manhunt that put most moonshiners out of business, and many behind bars. Alex Gabbard tells the story of moonshining in the mountains where he grew up and how it influenced the rural South and fledgling stock car racing, giving the sport its most colorful and enduring characters.
